Worried about furniture fading? Protect your investment with 3M™ Window Films
Most of us are aware that when sunlight hits our skin, it harms healthy cells, causing age spots, wrinkles, or even skin cancer. But did you know that the sun can damage your property in a similar way?
While natural light may brighten up and elevate your living space, over time it can fade carpeting, wood, photographs, fabrics, and other valuables.
Before we share how you can slow down the process of fading, you first need to understand why things fade from sunlight in the first place.
Colour fading, also known as photodegradation, occurs when the light-absorbing colour bodies known as chromophores, which are present in dyes, are broken down by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, causing them to fade.
What causes fading?
Sunlight is made up of three elements:
- Visible light: the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye
- Infrared light: Invisible to the human eye, but causes a rise in temperature
- Ultraviolet (UV) light: cannot be felt or seen
Each of the above types of light contributes to interior fading. However, UV light is the leading cause accounting for 40 percent. Visible sunlight and solar heat follow, each responsible for 25 percent of all fading.
It is important to note that there are two different types of UV rays that come from the sun–UVA rays and UVB rays. Your glass windows are capable of blocking out UVB rays on their own, but they are unable to prevent UVA rays from seeping through. And it’s these UVA rays that are responsible for damaging your skin and precious belongings.
In fact, it doesn’t even have to be a bright and sunny day for these rays to cause irreversible damage. Research indicates that even on the darkest days, an estimated 80 percent of UV rays are able to travel past the clouds, seep through your glass windows and damage your assets.
Protect your valuables without sacrificing natural light
One of the best ways you can protect your valuables from fading without sacrificing natural light is by installing 3M™ Window Films for sun control. These films reduce the effects of solar heat and visible light while blocking up to 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays.
While no window film can eliminate fading completely, 3M™ Window Films come pretty close... They drastically slow down the process of fading, allowing you to protect your investment and keep your building’s interior looking vibrant and beautiful for the foreseeable future.
